Peep Hole - Part 2 of 6 - The Tools

Supplies and Tools:
Hole Saw Kit

Needlenose pliers
Ruler
Screwdriver (flat tipped)
Vice Grips® pliers


Mrs. Black wanted a better security peep hole on her front door. These post shows the tools process. 

This post shows seven steps on what tools needed for this job.

Step 1: Fig.3 shows below are the tools needed for the job. The list is on the upper left of this posts. Ideally an open end wrench is better than needlenose  pliers to secure the nut.  The ruler and the hole saw kit is to make sure that the size of 1-3/4 hole saw is used for the opening of the new large hole.

Step 2: Fig.4 shows the tools below are Vice Grips®, and Needlenose pliers. It would have been better if a Crescent Wrench with open/closed-end wrench that way there is no slippage. But those tools were in another tool box away from the work site.

Step 3: Fig.5 shows any Hole Saw Kit will work, it does not have to be a name brand. But if that is what you have in your tool chest, use it. Fig.6 shows a 1-3/4 inch saw hole saw assembled and ready to cut the door hole.

Step 4: Fig.7 shows the wrong tools are used to secure the hole saw to the base. The next post is the new peep hole called Giant Screen. At the top of the post on the right side shows fig.1 crescent wrench and fig.2 shows open end wrench. Those are the correct tools to secure this hole saw.

Step 5: Fig.8 are the Prime-Line drilling directions for U 9917 Giant Screen Viewer:

Step 6: Drills: Fig.9 is the pilot hole if the door does not have an existing peep hole. Fig.10 - 3/16 for the pilot hole that the hole saw drill bit will be used in combination with this hole.

Step 7: Fig.11 shows caulking is not necessary, but if the home is in an area that rains then purchase clear silicone.

How to Make Hole Toss Game

1x4x3 Pine boards
2x4x24 in. Douglas fir  
Cordless screwdriver with Phillip bit
Drywall screws 1 1/4 and 3/4 in.
Forstner bit 4 in. or hole saw kit (Fig.11)
Oriented strand board 2 x 4 x 3/4 in.
Sheetrock course screws 1 1/4 in. 
Simpson Strong-Tie® LS50Z adjustable framing L-angle 4-7/8 in. 18-gauge
Unions Schedule 40 (3) 

Jamilla came to The Home Depot to purchase a Toss game for her nephews birthday. They came to the Anaheim Super Store - Lumber/Building Materials area for information. Jamilla wanted at first to purchase the game but when she saw it she decided to make the game herself. 

The game sell between $60 and $130. A toss game is 2 ft by 4 ft with a 6-inch hole centered 9 inches from the top of the frame. The panel is slightly elevated so the corn/sand bag can fall on the ground. The corn/sand toss game is an activity game, played outside and it can involve professional players. Some games can pay thousands of dollars if you are good at the game. There are many organization that have official rules. The American Cornhole Association (ACA) is one of these professional organization. Other organization are NCAAF, NFL, NHL, MLB.

Corn Toss can be called Baggo, Bags, Bagz, Backyard Toss, Bean Bag, Bean Toss, Chuck-O, Cornhole, Lawn Toss, Lawn game, Ladder Toss, Muckers, Hillybilly Horseshoes, Soft Horseshoes, Indiana Horseshoes, Washer pitchingTailgate, Tailgate Toss and Mölkky.

This post shows the nine steps to create a simple hole toss game. The game is slightly different than other versions but it will work the same as the other version of toss games available on the Internet or local sporting stores.  

Step 1: Fig.1 shows the Oriented Strand Board (OSB) that will be used as the top of the game. Another choice is to use Pine plywood. Pine is already sanded and ready to use. OSB does not have a smooth surface but it only cost $5 for a 2x4 piece 3/4 thick.

Step 2: Measure the 1x4x4 pine board and obtain the center of the board section. The middle area will hold the height of the game, notice below the middle has a 2x4x2 in the center of the board. 

Step 3: Fig.2 and fig.3 shows that a LS50Z Adjustable Framing L-Angle was used to hold the 2x4x2 center post as well as attaching it to the 1x4x3 pine board. This bracket is construction grade and can take a lot of rough handling.

Step 4: Fig.4 use a Ryobi Cordless Drill with a Phillip Bit insert a drywall screw attach sheet rock screws into the L bracket with 4-screws. Two screws on the 2x4x2 and two on the 1x4x3 base. Adding support on both sides of the center post will give the additional support more strength to hold the main panel of the game.

Note: Drywall screws should be no longer than 3/4 in. for the 1x4x3 and screws being screwed into the 2x3x2 should be no longer than 1 1/4 inch in length.

Step 5: Fig.5 shows the back view of the LS50Z adjustable framing L-Angle attached to the 1x4x3 pine board.

Step 6: Fig.6 shows the LS50Z Adjustable Framing L-Angle is attached to the 2x4x2 center post as well as the OSB board.

Step 7: The kit used to cut the 4 inch holes into the OSB paneling. 
Step 8: Placing three 2x2 bracket on the board then attaching the 4-inch slip unions the rings would stay in place. Later a 4 in. hole saw cut the holes for the corn or sand bags to fall to the ground.

Step 9: Fig.7 and fig.8 shows that this is a side view of the completed game. There are no sides to this game but if you need sides it easy enough to lay the game on its side and trace it on a new board. Then use a saw to cut the sides and use glue to adhere the sides together. All corn/sand hole toss game sold have sides.

Now the game is ready to be used. An additional 1x4 pine could had been added for more stability. How to Make Kitchen Cabinet Microwave Plug Hole

Willie is a postal employee that travels 360 days a year, and has little time to work on his century old studio cottage in downtown Chino, California. Willie called me to solve a carpentry solution in his kitchen. He had less then ten inches between the refrigerator and the custom kitchen cabinet. His goal was to create a hole into the cabinets for a microwave power cord. The problem was that the microwave was inside the cabinet, and there was no electrical outlet in that cabinet. Seems simple enough but I needed to cut two holes to get the cordage to the outlet.

This post show the five steps to make circular holes.

Step 1: Above fig.1 shows the drill, not an ordinary electric drill there is little space to get a hole under cabinets, this requires a electric powered 3/8'' angle drill with 1-1/8 inches hole saw. With the hole saw attached to the drill using a chuck key to grab the hole saw in its jar measures just under 4 inches, plenty of room to drill into the cabinet from the bottom. An extension cord was used to supply ample power to the angle drill. 
Step 2: Fig.2 shows the end of the microwave plug as a guide to choose which hole saw. Willie wanted the hole just a bit bigger to get the plug in and out.

Step 3: Fig.3 shows drilling from the bottom helped me to place the hole just two inches from the cabinet.
