It's early fall and the weather is changing, and now its time to let go of useless items like our Sony VAIO Tower computer. There will be seven posts showing step-by-step method of removing the the data information, then the more posts on different strategies on destroying the hard drives.
These post shows what tools will be used for the destruction of these hard drives.
1 | This is part of my Ryobi Drill accessories. The screws will need #1 Phillip tip to unscrew those screws.
2 | These are some of the aluminum screws that were removed from each hard drive. Earlier hard drives had Phillip screws and were easily removed. But, today's hard drives have shallow star screws. These type of drives are a real challenge to open and release the circular drives.
3 | These are Titanium Drill Bits. Use the 3/8 inch or largest bits for this job. They are three types of drill, regular black metal drills, Titanium bits (gold) and Cobalt drills are the strongest and most expensive. |

Ryobi Cordless Drill 18-Volt. Any cordless drill bit can be used for this job. |
5 | Ryobi Drill Set to obtain Star bit, Phillip bits and Bit Holder.
6 |
|
Here are old beat up Wood Chisels used on other jobs. They do make metal chisels but these did the job just fine. |
7 |
|
This is an 1-inch Wood Chisels. |
8 | Here are two more Wood Chisels, one 3/4, 1/2, and 1/4 inch will be used to open each drive.
9 |
|
Hammer, any well balanced hammer. |
10 | Electric Drill with manual chuck are better if the drilling process takes a long time. The manual chuck will need a chuck key but it a good bet that the drill bit will need to be held tightly to the electric drill.
11 | Wood Spring Clamps to hold each drive |
|
12 | Ryobi 6-Pack Battery Chargers to recharge the drills. |
|
13 | Black Metal Drill Bit Set
14 | Saw horses used as legs for the table that is needed to hold the top of the table.
15 | Here the Saw Horses are below a table made of 2x4x4 Douglas Fir. The table is held tight with a 4-Foot Table Clamp. This is the flat surface used to destroy the hard drives. |
